How I Avoid Consultation Casualties →
my comment on this post:
I will do on-phone or Skype consults with prospective clients to find out their goals so that I can quote them more accurately — but for me to travel to meet up in person and do an actual strategy meeting, I require payment.
I usually quote my “consultation” as an ala carte item so that prospective client feels free to do the consult with me (which I offer fairly cheap)...
Are "Lists" The New Twitter Status Measurement? →
my comment on this post:
More than the number of lists, I’m finding it interesting the names of the lists and I see where this also plays a part in your internet “worth.” In fact, the list names could be more important than the numbers, because the names of the lists – become Google juice!
Each list has a dedicated permalink, that ends with the name of your list (such as:...

This Is Aarons Life: Friday Vidcast 10-16-09
my comment on this video post:
Good advice, I find I am doing less and less of these “bread and butter” project as time goes on… but in the start, it was a *must*, I’d suggest people getting a toe hold on freelancing to consider getting on a short-term contract position, this allows you good money, but more freedom than a staff position. I did...
Jack Of All Trades? Or Specialization? →
my comment on this audio post:
So, I think that being a “jack-of-all” is one thing, marketing yourself as such is another.
My first couple years in the industry I worked almost 50/50 at both print and web design before moving into a senior web design position where my job then became almost exclusively web based. I feel like I am skilled at both, and confident working in both, but I think where...
Is Anyone Really Listening? Social Media Marketing →
my comment on this post:
These tools can work in different ways for different types of businesses, but for me – in design. I’m not trying to sell anything on Twitter or my blog, those outlets aren’t catered to my clients, that’s what my studios portfolio site it for. The social media stuff is about establishing my personal brand, connecting with the design community and growing...

This sounds like a great solution! I have tried Pipes before, but it never occurred to me to use it for this problem! ….It would be helpful to maybe see a quick video of how you made the pipe, for anyone who may come across this who might not be familiar with it! (just an idea.) Thanks for the great tip, Madeline!

My comment on this post:
I think as designers in today’s world, we have this tie to both an “artists” culture as well as the webs “open-source” culture and both communities have this attitude that sharing resources and knowledge is what will improve the craft/community as a whole.
It’s what makes you a business person to have *some* competitive nature, but I think what’s different about some of...

My comment on this post:
Traci Feit Love makes a good point in her comment, you have to remember is that building a community is hard work. You’re not going to make your first post and suddenly have millions visiting your site to see what you have to say, but it’s not *about* the numbers, if you focus on the numbers you’re playing the wrong game.. it’s about focusing on your community and being...

My comment on this video:
First, a play on a famous Picasso quote:
“Good designers steal, great designers steal from children.”
hehe
So, what I’m about to say may sounds really wacky, but I feel like a lot of the time — it is the rules and guidelines that I have to work within as designer that makes me *more* creative.
In so many ways, I feel like art school killed my creativity. It was this...

I think you’ve covered some good points on staying in good communication with your clients. I know things that really have worked well for me and made my clients feel good about the process is that I share a lot with them during the initial design phase, this helps me to know I am on the right track and also allows for a more collaborative process.
If you finish your design and then show the...

A mix between folder-izing your bookmarks and using a Feed Aggregator, a couple weeks ago I organized the feeds I subscribe to into folders and it has changed my day considerably! I am able to get through my new stories easier and am now missing less.

interesting chat! One things I’d say off the bat is that online is real life at this point. It’s all real. When I first graduated from college my first job was working in sales and marketing for a luxury consumer products company, I did a lot of direct interaction with customers and when I started out I sucked at selling things, but as I got to know the...
